White Space and Postgraduate Program in Curating present
- Curatorial Practice - Friday 4th March 2011 - 7pm
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Lecture by Oliver Kielmayer
Curatorial work between action and reflection
Oliver Kielmayer presents samples of his curatorial work as a result of problematic preconditions. With a very practical attitude, a selection of projects is described from a problem solving point of view; this authentic genesis of curatorial work is then confronted with the needs of curatorial discourse. The aim is to show the essential ambivalence that is crucial for successful curatorial work: It is always based on the thorough analysis of a given situation but must then be followed by a theoretical reflection. Oliver Kielmayer is currently the director of Kunsthalle Winterthur.

good cop bad cop present: Phantom Ride
featuring special guest Mike Pearson
Chapter arts centre, market road, canton, Cardiff
Saturday 26th February, 2011, 8.00pm, £10 / £8 / £6
In the early 20th century William Haggar, a travelling entertainer from Essex settled in Wales and unwittingly helped to transform live entertainment into the ‘cultural industries'.
With their unique brand of ‘propositional performance', good cop bad cop draw on reports of Haggar's long lost films to evoke an era of artistic and commercial experimentation.
At a time when films could be advertised by length in feet, a Burry Port shipwreck could pass as newsreel of the Titanic and assaulting the police could pass as a comic act.
Things could have turned out very differently.....

- Curatorial Practice - Friday 25 February 2011 - 7pm
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Lecture by Yilmaz Dziewior
What are the current needs? Possible differences between Kunstverein (art club) and Kunsthalle (exhibition hall)
In his talk Yilmaz Dziewior will examine different modes and formats of curating in relation to the needs of current cultural production. During his directorship at the Kunstverein in Hamburg he worked not only with visual artists like Andrea Fraser, Cildo Meireles and Haegue Yang but also with architects and people from theatre and music. He will discuss earlier projects of his and some of his plans for the Kunsthaus Bregenz, where he is the director since October 2009. Also in Bregenz he will continue to examine the relation of visual art to other cultural and social fields.

Postgraduate Program in Curating ICS, ZHdK presents at White Space:
- Curatorial Theory - Friday 24. September 2010. - 7pm
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Lecture by Marcus Steinweg:
Curating Incommensurability Art is the opening up toward incommensurability. Its aim is forever to render the incommensurable commensurable, to lend form to the formless; and that makes art a paradoxical praxis. The resistance art offers to the commensurable has nothing to do with escapism. Rather, it seeks to define the relation to reality (to what already exists) with greater precision by being resistant to it, an act that helps the subject make contact with what marks reality's boundary and its inconsistency. The demystification of the world has led to the mystification of the demystified reality. Enlightenment has engendered its own obscurantism. Facts are the new religion. Facts are essentially consistent and reliable. That is the meaning of the word and its function: to ensure familiarity. The opening toward the incommensurable, by contrast, is an opening toward unfamiliarity as a value of the world, an opening toward its inconsistency, which encompasses its contingency and its becoming, its invisibility and its slippage, its indisponibility and its insignificance.
